Totara Lodge Shoot. Sporting Charges 2011

Not surprisingly the cost of shooting around the world is a common topic for discussion when hunters gather. The high volume shooting of doves in some South American countries still represents extraordinary value on a per bird basis; however once you start to include other wild species such as ducks and perdiz and then include a nice estancia into the mix, then the cost escalates significantly. For driven shooting, particularly pheasants, the best value birds are in low labour cost countries such as eastern Europe. But for quality driven pheasants at a sensible price, nothing in New Zealand compares with the value and quality of the experience offered on Totara Lodge Shoot.

No bag limits exist on Totara Lodge Shoot and our gazetted status as an Upland Game Property with Special Conditions allows us to shoot both hen and cock birds.

French red legged partridges have also been released at Totara Lodge Shoot and these are on our game list for 2011. There are also American Merriams turkey on the game list. Guns scoring a turkey are welcome to retrieve it from the game cart at the end of the day.

The minimum driven day offered in 2011 is 150 birds picked-up at a cost of $1,500 + GST per Gun. The calendar of shoot days outlines the scheduled dates, availability and expected bag which is priced accordingly.

The procedure for the day of driven shooting is for Guns to arrive no later 8.30am for coffee and croissants then a safety briefing followed by departure soon after for the first drive of the day. Whilst the intention is always to create a relaxed and social atmosphere for the Guns, on shoot day the game keeper has around 25 staff in the field with beaters, pickers-up and other assistants and so timing becomes important. We do two drives before having elevenses of hot soup, bar and savouries and then a further drive before breaking for a leisurely lunch in the Shoot Room. The afternoon includes as many drives as it takes to achieve the requested bag and upon the conclusion of shooting, the Guns, game keeper and shoot staff gather for a barbeque and to toast the birds.

On driven days, all staff costs, hospitality and refreshments are included in the sporting charges. Gratuities to the keeper are discretionary and are the only extra cost at Totara Lodge Shoot.

Limited walked-up shooting is still available on the Totara Lodge Shoot. For walked-up shooting the cost is $800 + GST for a single Gun. The expected bag is 8 birds for a competent shot.

1 On walked-up days, Guns should bring their own 4WD vehicle and refreshments.

NOTE:
